In 2018, my daughter and I turned our shared love of the ocean into action, embarking on a mission to become stewards of our local waterways. On our first endeavor, we participated in a kayak trip through Lake Union with the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance pulling plastic waste out of the lake with tongs. As we picked out straws and bags, we realized there had to be a better way to prevent waste in our waters. That's when we started learning about zero waste.
Zero waste is the prevention of waste by reusing products and then recycling them only when they can no longer be used. This process eliminates garbage altogether, so nothing ends up in our lakes, rivers, and oceans. Excited by this idea, we looked for stores that carried zero waste items and started exploring creative ways to make some of them ourselves. As we began to share this information with others, we discovered a growing community of like-minded people who wanted to learn more and practice zero waste living.
Building on our belief in a cleaner world, we expanded our mission into a business and a community outreach program. Rycycle Bags is the proud parent company of Bags By U, an educational youth group promoting upcycled bags and producing beeswax wraps. Bags By U gives environmental presentations and holds instructional sewing and craft events at schools in the Seattle area. Rycycle Bags produces and distributes upcycled cotton masks and reusable produce and bulk food bags.
